Dr. Alveda King: Celebrate Christ in Every Season

Today is October 31, 2025. Many will celebrate the Halloween holiday. I will not. I choose instead to celebrate Hallelujah Jesus. It's actually good to celebrate Jesus Christ in every season.

As you read this particular message, you may ask, "Well, that's just something Christians say. What if I'm not a Christian?" Well, everyone is not a Christian. However I am a Christian, and I'm blessed to proclaim that I celebrate the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the goodness of God 365 days a year.

We are in the beginning of the annual holiday season in America. After October, there is November with Thanksgiving, where family and friends gather for fellowship. During this season, as Believers, we give thanks and glory to God for His goodness. If you are lonely and experiencing fear and loss during this season, reach out to the faith community; for prayer and comfort.

Here in America, the holiday Thanksgiving tradition is often attached to the arrival of pilgrims on our continent many, many years ago. However, let me say again, it's appropriate to have Thanksgiving to God, 365 days a year. It's not just about turkey dinners.

In December, we have the Christmas celebration. For me and many Christians, Jesus is truly the reason for the season; outshining all traditions. Many will remind us that Jesus Christ was not born in December. Actually, history supports that fact.

However, there was a St. Nicholas, a godly man who spent much of his life blessing others financially. He had the least of these at heart. That spirit of generosity is acknowledged during the season.

January gives us pause to celebrate New Year's Day. Many celebrate the holiday with great parties and alcohol and dancing. Some choose to go to church and have holy communion. Others add repentance of sin and forgiveness to the mix.

Again, let's remember that we should celebrate the goodness of God in every season. Witches, ghouls, fraternities and sororities, decorated holiday trees - all are part of human traditions. The Bible reminds us to keep ourselves from idols. Of course people will say, "Well, I don't worship statues and all of that kind of thing." And yet some people actually do worship material things.

However, let me remind myself, I'll look at me and not point my finger at you. If I care more about things that I own or things that I have, or organizations that are founded by human beings, much more than I care about my time with loving, serving and obeying God, and repenting of my sins and forgiving others, then perhaps I am worshiping some other things more than I realize.

Many of us realize that we're in another challenging season right now with the United States government being shut down. I was praying the other day, and I said, God, it just doesn't seem right. The government is shut down. What are people going to do about SNAP and food stamps? What about the mothers who don't know where they're going to get a turkey for Thanksgiving? The dad who can't buy that train set for his kid or that doll and put it under the tree?

Then a still, small voice reminded me: "It's not just the government's job to take care of the least of these. It's the job of the people of God." Wow! Have we been passing the buck?

While I was praying, I was reminded in my heart that true religion is to love mercy, do good, take care of the widows and the orphans; the least of these. My heart remembered that it's really the job of the Church and the Christians to show compassion for the homeless and the needy; and not just the United States government.

So as I write this message today, I want to say, if you're going through some difficult times, fear not. Let's pray together that God will bless you and help you. Let human kindness and agape love help you - rather than rage, rather than anger, rather than fear.

Coming up for the rest of the year, I'm happy to be blessed to share some upcoming releases:

Finally, as you're planning your holiday shopping, put God first. Save some love and kindness for those in need. Maybe donate a warm coat and a turkey dinner or two. And if you're in need, visit your local church. Many open our doors and hearts in time of need.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

Remember. God loves us. We are God's one blood human race. God created us. Let's remember the loving kindness and goodness of God in every season and let that truth begin in our hearts and be shared with those around us God bless you.
